Mother, kids held hostage near Lake Mead and Buffalo

Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- Las Vegas police evacuated homes and closed down streets near Lake Mead Boulevard and Buffalo Drive in west Las Vegas on Thursday morning.

The incident began between 5 and 6 a.m.

A woman and her children were held hostage by a robbery suspect. The alleged suspect had kicked in their door.

When police arrived, they heard someone threatening the woman and telling her to close the door. It was then determined it was a home invasion.

Police said the family members were able to crawl down a ladder from a second-story window and escape.

Neighbors said it was like something out of a movie.

"I'm up in the second story looking down and there's sheriff guys sitting on the back of my daughter's car and the SWAT team pulls up and then there's negotiators and their card table right there. There's the robot and the dog and the helicopter and it was just overwhelming," said Vickie Black.

The suspect, who still hasn't been identified, surrendered after a standoff with police.
