Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- Las Vegas police are investigating a murder and an attempted suicide, involving a mother and her son.
On Saturday, police were called to Allen Belt's home near Mount Hood and East Las Vegas Boulevard.
Belt said he heard screaming from the woman who rents the back room with her 28-year-old mentally disabled son.
"I went back to the divider and asked her if she was okay," said Belt.
Police found the woman, 51-year-old Joanne Hafer, on the floor and unresponsive. Her son Matthew was dead on the couch. His body was in a state of advanced decomposition.
Police believe he died of a prescription drug overdose, induced by his own mother, who didn't want to care for him anymore.
According to the police report, detectives found a letter in which Joanne wrote, "My decision to take our lives does not come without a lot of thought and consideration."
The letter was addressed to Joanne's friend, Cheyenne.
"He was a sweet boy. He had autism and he suffered from epilepsy. He required attention all the time," Cheyenne said.
Just days before police found Matthew dead, Joanne gave Cheyenne her will.
"I knew that she suffered from depression but I didn't know that she would ever think of doing this," said Cheyenne.
She visited Joanne in the hospital, where she is recovering, but Joanne didn't have many words for her.
"All she said to me was, I was supposed to die," said Cheyenne.
When Joanne is out of the hospital, she will be taken to the Clark County Detention Center to face murder charges.
