Panera Bread steps in it by asking 2-year-old girl to remove shoes

By Joyce Lupiani. CREATED Jan 13, 2014

Panera Bread really stepped in it when they asked a two-year-old girl to remove her shoes.

It happened in Georgia. An employee at Panera Bread asked Emma Duke's mom to remove her shoes because they were "squeaky" and bothering other customers.

Emma's shoes are special though. She needs those particular shoes because of a developmental disorder.

Mom Catherine Duke says she was very upset about the incident and left the restaurant crying.

Panera Bread is trying to make it up to them though. They apologized to Emma's parents and offered to host a fundraiser to help with Emma's medical bills.

In addition, they will be putting their employees through additional customer-relations training to help avoid similar incidents in the future.

The employee who made the request was new, according to Panera Bread.
