Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- New details have been released into the recent officer involved shooting in southwest Las Vegas.

On Dec. 16 at approximately 9:40 p.m., Las Vegas police responded to a two-story single family residence in the 3200 block of University Avenue to investigate reports of a potentially suicidal man.

Arriving officers met the individual's roommate who reported the man, later identified as 39-year-old Jose Luis Aguilar, was threatening suicide.

When officers attempted to make contact with Aguilar through an open front door, they observed him descending the stairs with a shotgun pointed in their direction.

Officers immediately retreated to positions of cover outside of the residence as Aguilar continued to move in their direction, and ultimately exited into the front driveway area.

Officers were able to convince the suspect to put the weapon on the ground and then lay himself on the ground; however, as they moved forward to take him into custody, Aguilar abruptly stood up, picked up the weapon and pointed it at approaching officers.

Two officers dispatched their weapons, striking the suspect in the lower extremities, causing him to fall to the ground.

Following a brief struggle, Aguilar was taken into custody and transported to Sunrise Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

Aguilar has been booked in absentia into the Clark County Detention Center on charges of assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer (two counts) and resisting a public officer with a firearm.

The officers involved in this incident have been placed on paid administrative leave. Their names will be released after 48 hours.

This is the 18th incident involving the use of deadly force by Las Vegas police officers this year.
