Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- Starting this weekend, there will be a big push for people here in Southern Nevada to dial 702 before every local call.
The idea is to get locals into the habit of ten-digit-dialing since they're going to have to next year when the 725 area code is introduced.
The Public Utilities Commission of Nevada approved that second area code to go into effect next year in the same geographic region as the existing 702 area code. Officials decided to do this because of increasing consumer demand. Existing customers will retain their current area code and telephone numbers.
Dialing all ten digits when calling a 702 phone number will be mandatory starting May 3, 2014. After this date, if the ten digit dialing procedure is not used, calls will not be completed and an automatic voice recording will inform the caller about proper dialing.
Beginning June 3, 2014, new telephone lines or services may be assigned numbers using the 725 area code.
