Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- A northeast valley neighborhood went on alert after they found a five-year-old special needs child, whose mother didn't know she was missing.
According to the arrest report, when police finally made contact with Nicole Varain at about 7:15 p.m., she told them her daughter had only been gone for about half an hour.
But neighbors first spotted the child riding her bike near busy entrance gates at about 2:30 that afternoon, and mounted a frantic search.
They said Varain's daughter was barefoot, dehydrated and hungry. Worse, according to the arrest report, she couldn't speak.
Neighbor Jocelyn Gonzales said, "She had a disability. If it was like another little girl, she could like tell us where she lived, but she didn't know anything."
Varain was booked into the Clark County Detention Center on a charge of child endangerment.
