Henderson, NV (KTNV) -- Flames raced through a home in Henderson overnight, claiming the lives of an elderly woman and her son.
Firefighters still aren't sure how the fire started, but they know it began in the living room and the two people inside were unable to escape.
It happened early Wednesday morning at a home on Armstrong Circle where neighbors were stunned to hear what happened.
88-year-old Donna Griffin and her 67-year-old son Ralph did not survive the fire at the home she lived in for more than 30 years.
A passerby saw the flames and called 911.
Neighbors said the family was quiet and liked their privacy but were always friendly.
"I know the son was the caretaker for the mother, he would take her out and they'd go shopping for groceries. Usually just stayed inside. Very nice from what I remember as a kid and growing up, they'll be missed," said Michael Workman, neighbor.
Donna and Ralph both once worked at the Rainbow Casino on Water Street. Donna had been a receptionist for 21 years before retiring in 2008.
Donna's colleagues were devastated by the news, as were neighbors who are saying prayers and hoping for answers.
Both Henderson Fire and Police said they are still investigating the fire but they do not suspect foul play.
