(KTNV) -- National Football League Commissioner Roger Goodell wants to assure football fans that the sport will remain hard-hitting and physical but that the league is committed to player safety.
Goodell released a letter to fans saying the league will find ways to protect players so they can enjoy longer careers on the field.
The letter was sent after two excerpts were released from a book about NFL concussions claiming that the NFL used its power and resources to downplay effects of concussions on players.
So far, the NFL has incorporated independent team physicians to assist players. The league is also emphasizing safety in youth football.
The letter was sent by email to 10 million names in a fan database.
