Minnesota carpenter survives after nail pierces heart

By Joyce Lupiani. CREATED Oct 3, 2013

(KTNV) -- It is an amazing story of survival and luck. A man building a deck accidently shot a nail through his chest and right into his heart.

Fortunately, he is still very much alive and talking about what happened.

The x-ray of Eugene Rakow's chest shows a nail lodged deep into the Minneapolis carpenter's breast bone.

Rakow was repairing his neighbor's deck when the nail gun he was using kicked back.

A 3-1/2 inch nail pierced his chest and heart.

Doctors say Rakow's sternum stopped the nail from causing more damage.

He says he just wants to go back to being a carpenter.
