Man confesses to murder to get out of psychiatric hospital
Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- A 28-year-old Las Vegas man has confessed to a five-year-old murder because he wanted to be in jail versus a local psychiatric hospital.
According to an arrest report, Henry Perez claims that he shot Alejandro Nunez Fuentes in 2008 because Fuentes disrespected him.
Perez told police that he had fronted Fuentes some drugs on the day of the shooting.
Fuentes initially gave Perez a pair of shoes but then demanded them back. According to Perez, Fuentes spit on the ground in front of him and that he took that as a sign of disrespect.
Perez told police that after Fuentes spit on the ground, he pulled a gun from his waistband and fired four times.
A witness from the time of the murder in 2008 had told police about Henry Perez, whom they called "Sanchez," but he was not arrested at the time.
On July 9, a detective with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department received a phone call from Perez.
Perez told the detective that he wanted to confess to a murder that had occurred several years ago on Calcaterra Circle.
Perez also told the detective that he wanted to confess to the murder because jail was better than being in a mental facility.
The detective visited Perez at the Rawson-Neal Psychiatric Hospital.
The detective was initially skeptical of Perez's story but Perez was able to provide numerous details about the murder.
Perez also made several bizarre statements about being beaten by a corrections officer and claimed that the DEA had planted a bug in this body.
Perez was initially left at the hospital but was arrested and booked into the Clark County Detention Center on July 24.
He is being charged with murder with a deadly weapon, three counts of discharging a gun into a structure and possession of a gun by a prohibited person.
Rawson-Neal Psychiatric Hospital is the same hospital that has been embroiled in the patient dumping scandal the past few months.
Rawson-Neal was recently denied accreditation by the Joint Commission.
The murder took place on June 7, 2008, at a hosing complex on Calcaterra Circle near Paradise Road.
