Man accused of carjacking that killed CHP officer appears in court

Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- The man that police said is responsible for the carjacking that resulted in the death of a California Highway Patrol officer and his brother-in-law appeared in court Wednesday morning.
29-year-old James Montgomery was in Las Vegas Justice Court for his 72-hour hearing. The judge ordered Montgomery to appear at 10 a.m. Sept. 4 for a preliminary hearing.
Montgomery is accused of stealing a truck from the valet area of the Flamingo hotel and casino.
He then crashed the truck at the intersection of Flamingo Road and Valley View Boulevard.
CHP officer Jesus Manuel Magdaleno Jr. and his brother-in-law, Felix Brandon Cruz III were killed as a result of the crash.
Magdaleno and Cruz were in Las Vegas for Magdaleno's bachelor party. They were loading the truck when it was stolen.
Cruz was in the back of the truck as it was driven away and Magdaleno jumped in the back to help his brother-in-law.
Las Vegas police are still looking for anyone who may have witnessed the incident. They are also asking taxi cab companies to check for any video of the incident that they may have.
