Local teacher arrested for alleged kidnapping and child abuse
Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- A Las Vegas kindergarten teacher is behind bars accused of kidnapping and abusing a teenage girl.
Clark County School District Police arrested 44-year-old Melvyn Sprowson, a teacher at Wengert Elementary, after the teenage girl's parents filed a missing person's report weeks after they last saw their daughter.
Police said the teen met Sprowson on a social media website and began exchanging messages with the man. Officers said a short time later, the teen moved in with the teacher.
On Friday, CCSDPD conducted a search of Sprowson's home in the 4900 block of Russell Road and located the missing girl.
She was found unarmed and in good health.
Officers said the relationship appeared to be consensual and the teen was allowed to come and go as she pleased.
According to police, Sprowson had only been with the district for a few months.
A CCSD spokesperson confirmed Sprowson had no known criminal history and his background check was clean.
The teen is now back with family.
Sprowson was arrested at Wengert Elementary and charged with kidnapping, child abuse, contributing to the delinquency of a child, and obstruction.
