Las Vegas residents waiting for Mojave Max to come out of burrow

By Joyce Lupiani. CREATED Feb 2, 2014

Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- Forget about groundhog Punxsutawney Phil, we have Mojave Max here in Las Vegas.

People across the valley are waiting for Mojave Max to leave his burrow at the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.

Every fall, Mojave Max goes into brumation, which is the similar to hibernation, until spring. His emergence is taken as a sign that spring is on the way.

Each year, both kids and adults try to guess when and what time Max will emerge. There are no prizes for adults but kids can win some pretty cool prizes.

The watch for Mojave Max's emergence begins at 8 a.m. every day and ends at 4:30 p.m. at Red Rock.

Mojave Max became the spokestortoise for the Clark County Desert Conservation Program in 1995.

Last year, Max emerged from his burrow at 1:45 p.m. March 14.
