CREATED Nov 18, 2013

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) -- The federal government is committing $8.7 million for various projects in Nevada.

Funding announced Monday by the U.S. Department of Interior comes from the sale of public lands in southern Nevada's Las Vegas Valley.

The latest round of funds include $1.6 million for hazardous fuels reduction and wildfire prevention; $1.3 million for parks, trails and natural areas; and $1.6 million for conservation initiatives.

Also included is $1.3 million for habitat restoration in eastern Nevada; $381,000 for sensitive land acquisitions and $1.5 million for a reserve account.

The Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act was enacted in 1998, with portions of proceeds from public land sales going to the state general education fund, Southern Nevada Water Authority and for special conservation and recreational projects in the state.
