Henderson teen murder suspect appears in court
Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- The 16-year-old Henderson teenager who is accused of stabbing his mother and brother appeared in a Henderson courtroom Monday morning.
Adrian Navarro-Canales made his first appearance since he was arrested on Friday.
Police believe that Navarro-Canales killed his 40-year-old mother and nine-year-old brother on Sept. 17. In the beginning, police thought he may have also been the victim of a crime.
"I think as time will go on, perhaps we'll learn a little bit more about what happened and give us some reasons as to why he did this," said Steve Wolfson, district attorney.
Navarro-Canales was arrested on Sept. 25 at a food court near Las Vegas Boulevard and Tropicana Avenue.
Navarro-Canales looked around the courtroom Monday morning for his family members but none of them came to court.
Navarro-Canales is being charged as an adult.
"He is looking at other severe punishments such as anything from a prison sentence up to life in prison, even without the possibility of parole," said Wolfson.
Elvira Canales-Gomez and Cesar Navarro were stabbed to death in their apartment on Eastern Avenue near Sunridge Heights Parkway.
"Everybody's dealt with their grief. Everybody's cried it out and everything, my grief hasn't even started. I'm still shocked, I'm still in a different world where I'm not picturing any of this right now," said family member Ana Martinez.
Martinez wouldn't say why the suspect's family members were not in court Monday morning, but said she's focused on helping plan funerals for the victims and praying for Navarro-Canales.
A court date was set for Oct. 30 after the public defender asked for time to review the charges.
