Hearing in Las Vegas on controller candidacy

Hearing in Las Vegas on controller candidacy

CREATED Apr 2, 2014

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) -- A candidate for Nevada controller says he will challenge the secretary of state's finding that he doesn't meet residency requirements to run for the office.

John Michael Schaefer says he'll represent himself at a hearing scheduled Thursday before Clark County District Judge Carolyn Ellsworth.

The secretary of state's office claims Schaefer should be kept off the June Democratic primary ballot because he was a registered voter in Los Angeles and ran unsuccessfully for a seat on the City Council there in 2013.

But the 76-year-old Schaefer argues he's lived in Las Vegas for decades and considers it his home.

Schaefer served on the San Diego City Council in the 1960s and has been a perennial, if unsuccessful, candidate in various races around the country since then.
