Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- You know October is breast cancer awareness month. But did you know the Hard Rock Hotel is raising awareness and money for the cause? The hotel invited a group of breast cancer survivors to the hotel recently to see the softer side of the Hard Rock.
Three women, three lives and one very big thing in common. They all survived breast cancer. Barbara Tarbet said, "Luckily they caught it early. It's just so important to increase awareness out there. It's just critical."
And that's exactly what the Hard Rock hotel is trying to do. From T-shirts to pins and even cookies. The hotel is donating sales to the Youth Survival Coalition, a group that aims to diagnose breast cancer in younger women. Director of Retail Kerri Matherly said, "Our roots as a company are founded in philanthropy to make sure we're doing everything we can to find a cure."
On this day, the Hard Rock welcomed local breast cancer survivors for a day of fun, including lunch at Pink Taco, which is donating money from its all-you-can-eat and drink special.
At one time, none of these women knew they would be at the Hard Rock to enjoy this, including 13-year survivor Norine Rathbone. "When I finished my first chemo, there was a man two seats down. He hated it and didn't finish his chemo. He died in 2 months. That's how hard it is. You really have to have a lot of courage."
Norine had 3 lumps, all caught during a mammogram. But both Barbara and Toni found their lumps during self breast exams. And though they are healthy today, they are NOT in the clear.
Toni Lee said, "I want a cure. Yes. I absolutely want a cure. I inherited the BRCA 2 gene. So I never escape this. I wake up and go to bed wondering if it's ever going to come back. I try to live my life but it really takes over you. I just need a cure."
Until that comes, the Hard Rock is happy to pamper these ladies with a spa day. The spa has several treatments that are raising money for the cause too. But for these ladies, it's free, and boy do they deserve it.
Several hotels in town had events for breast cancer awareness month. Caesars has its hilarious Battle of the Bras. And all Stations Casinos sold goodies to help fund breast cancer research.
