GA teen convicted of killing baby in stroller

CREATED Aug. 30, 2013

(KTNV) -- The family of a Georgia toddler shot and killed in his stroller during a robbery saw some justice in the courtroom today.

18 year-old De'Marquise Elkins won't be living life normally. Today, a jury found him guilty of the March 21 killing of 13-month-old Antonio Santiago in Brunswick.

The trial took two weeks to complete. Due to the heartbreaking first-hand account by the toddler's mother, Sherry West, it only took two hours for a jury to determine that Elkins was a guilty man.

The man's mother, Karimah Elkins, was on trial alongside him. She was found guilty of tampering with evidence but acquitted of lying to police.

Police say Elkins and another teen used a gun to rob West. But, they got spooked and ended up shooting both West and her baby.

The mother was originally interrogated by police and suspected of being the gunman. She said, "I don't know how I'm going to sleep tonight looking in my baby's crib. We loved that little boy, a bunch."

Another teen, 15-year-old Dominique Lang, is also charged with murder in the case and is set to be tried at a later time.
