Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- A foreign exchange student will not be charged in the death of a man at South Point on Dec. 16.
22-year-old Matejs Balodis was facing a charge of open murder in the death of 55-year-old Sherman Dale Lamb.
Balodis, a Latvian citizen, appeared in a Las Vegas courtroom this morning. During his appearance, the case was dismissed and no charges were formally filed.
Balodis says that he was on his way back to Europe when he was befriended by Lamb during a layover. He told police that Lamb originally appeared to be nice and helped Balodis get a room at the South Point after his flight to New York was canceled.
Once they were at the hotel, Balodis says it became apparent that Lamb was trying to get his money and credit card number. Lamb became upset when Balodis would not comply and there was a physical altercation.
Balodis admitted to hitting Lamb in the face and head several times. After Lamb passed out, he called 911.
Lamb died after the altercation.
