Family, friends attend memorial dedication for murdered high school student
Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- 15-year-old Alyssa Otremba was brutally murdered in September of 2011.
On Thursday morning, about 70 people showed up for a ceremony to dedicate a bench and tree to the young girl.
The bench and tree are located near where Otremba's body was found after she was raped, stabbed, and burned in an effort to conceal her identity.
Police said the Arbor View High School student was killed by Javier Righetti, who was 19 years old at the time. Righetti allegedly chose the girl at random.
People who came for the ceremony talked about how good could come out of something so awful. The dedication was attended by friends of family of Alyssa.
The girl's mother said that is has been hard for the family to move on, but having this memorial built for her daughter will help. She also said that she wants the neighborhood when the murder took place to thrive and she does not want a horrible tragedy attached to the land.
Alyssa's father and her two younger sister were also present at the ceremony. They said they will visit the memorial often.
D.R. Horton, who purchased the land, paid for the memorial.
