Ex-guard remains jailed in prison cellphone case

CREATED Aug 20, 2014

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- A Las Vegas judge is questioning the source of bail money that a former Nevada state prison guard wants to post so he can serve house arrest while facing charges that he smuggled contraband to Las Vegas Strip shooting suspect Ammar Harris.

Attorney Jonathan MacArthur said Wednesday that Derland Blake wants to post $50,000 bail and faces a "significant" risk of harm from other jail inmates while awaiting a Sept. 3 preliminary hearing on seven felony charges.

The 30-year-old Blake is among seven people accused of smuggling cellphones, food, methamphetamines and vodka to Harris at High Desert State Prison in Indian Springs.

Harris is accused of a fatal shooting and crash on the Las Vegas Strip that killed an aspiring rapper, a cab driver and taxi passenger in 2013.
