Ex-Nevada lawmaker set for California court hearing
LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Former Nevada Assemblyman Steven Brooks is set to appear in court on charges stemming from a Southern California car chase and police confrontation in March.
Court records show Brooks was ordered to appear at 9 a.m. Tuesday for a preliminary hearing in a Victorville, Calif. courtroom.
Forty-one-year-old Brooks has been in a San Bernardino County jail since his March 28 arrest along Interstate 15 in Victorville.
That came the same day Nevada lawmakers voted to expel the Democrat from the Legislature following his streak of erratic behavior.
He has pleaded not guilty to charges of evading an officer, resisting police, throwing a substance at a vehicle and harming a police animal.
Brooks' defense previously asked that he be enrolled in a mental health court program, but that plan was rejected.
