Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- A family mourning the death of a young Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Explorer has learned that DUI charges against the man accused of causing the deadly crash have been dropped.
According to the district attorney’s office, tests on Jvon Williams show his blood alcohol level was below the legal limit when he was arrested.
The family of Angel Velasquez said they were blindsided by the announcement, and although they understand why the DA’s office can no longer pursue these more serious charges, they still believe Williams was drunk at the time of the crash, and drove off leaving Angel to die.
"They couldn't find him until like four hours later," said Angel’s mother, Marivel Jimenez. "Nobody knew where he was. So when they did the legal test, they couldn't probe that he had alcohol, maybe one beer."
Williams is now charged with reckless driving and leaving the scene of an accident.
According to Metro, Williams has been arrested a couple times before, once for DUI and again a year later for reckless driving.
