Overton, NV (KTNV) -- Two people are dead after a small, two-seater airplane crashed just before 9 p.m. Thursday in the Lake Mead Recreational Area.
Officials said is appears the plane crashed after taking off from the Echo Bay Air Strip near Lake Mead.
Witnesses who called 911 said the plane was flying low in the sky right before they saw a fireball.
National Park Services, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's Search and Rescue and Clark County Fire Department responded to the scene.
According to Lt. Jack Clements with LVMPD, the aircraft was completely destroyed.
The reason for the crash is unknown at this time and some are questioning why the pilot tried to take off at night.
NTSB investigators are expected to arrive on scene today to begin their investigation.
The Clark County coroner will release names and ages of the two people who were killed after relatives have been notified.
