Closer look at financial situation in North Las Vegas

North Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- The financial situation in North Las Vegas is more dire than originally thought.

The latest budget projections were unveiled at a special meeting on Tuesday night.

A projected deficit over the next seven years ballooned from $152 million to $211 million over the next seven years, after a district court judge recently ruled North Las Vegas didn't have the right to suspend union pay and benefit increases to balance the past two budgets.

"I have no doubt in my mind that we can pull out of this," said Mayor John Lee.

Mayor Lee said current union contract talks are better than they've been in years, and new revenue could be generated by developments at Apex and Capex.

North Las Vegas does have money in special purpose funds, but most can't be transferred to the general fund.

Lee said a lot can happen between now and when the city's final budget has to be submitted to the state in June.
