Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- Dozens of veterans and their families turned out for a candlelight vigil and memorial groundbreaking at Veterans Village in downtown Las Vegas.
Jacob Sportsman's mother Joyce choked back tears Monday night, as the Memorial Plaza honoring her son was dedicated.
The 22-year-old Navy firefighter died in 2012.
The vigil and the ceremony also honored veterans of all wars, from WWII to the present.
Veterans Village helps homeless vets get back on their feet.
Project coordinator, Dr. Arnold Stalk, said the programs offered will be especially vital in the coming months, "We're going to get hundreds and thousands of veterans are going to be returning from Afghanistan, and we're ready here to help refer them out and to handle those situations."
Veterans Village was transformed from the old Econo Lodge over the past 18 months with help from sponsors like Home Depot.
