Boy suffers burns after mother tells him to set car on fire
HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) -- Police say a 30-year-old Las Vegas mother was behind on loan payments on a van that she told her 11-year-old son to torch this week on a remote street near Sam Boyd Stadium.
Henderson police spokesman Keith Paul says the boy was hospitalized after his clothing caught fire while he set fire to the 2000 Chevrolet Venture van early Wednesday.
The boy is hospitalized at University Medical Center, but police say he's expected to survive.
Juanita Denise Carr is being held at the Henderson city jail pending a court appearance on arson, conspiracy and child abuse causing substantial bodily harm charges.
Carr told police she was behind on payments and the van didn't run properly despite $1,200 in recent repairs.
