Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- The school supplies section at many stores are filling up with parents rushing to get their kids' back to school checklist completed.
Pencils, pens and notebooks are at the top of the list.
Parents all over the valley are stocking up on school supplies to avoid the last minute rush.
Some parents chose to leave the kids at home to speed up the process.
"They want everything. I'm an in and out and let’s get it done," Aaron Bailly said.
While others brought the children along to do their own shopping, although they admit it costs them a little more.
"Sticking to the list, or picking up extra stuff?" Picking up extra stuff to donate," Amy Huang said.
While stores were offering back to school sales, shopping centers were offering special deals as well to encourage parents to get the job done early.
Most parents say avoiding the crowds is reward enough.
"We got out real early to beat the heat, beat the crowd. Hopefully we'll be back at home in the pool in about an hour," Spence Johnston said.
Even early-bird parents say certain parts of the back to school ritual are difficult no matter when you start.
"We are on our second mall. They are beyond picky. The boy is easy, the girl is more difficult, but being a teenager they have to look their best," Johnston said.
When all is said and done, the National Retail Federation says the average family will spend $635 dollars on back to school items.
That is down more than $50 from last year.
