New York (KTNV) -- India is mad at the United States because they said the U.S. wrongly arrested an Indian diplomat.
The arrest happened in New York.
Prosecutors said Devyani Khobragade, India's deputy consul general, abused her nanny, a person she brought from India after forging immigration papers.
They said she forced the nanny to work long hours for just $3 per hour, which is far below minimum wage.
India is describing the arrest of Devyani as an insult. The strip search and handcuffing of Devyani added fuel to the fire.
But, authorities in New York said she was treated just like any other suspect. She was arrested by the U.S. Marshals Service as she dropped her child off at school
The woman's lawyer said this is all about politics. The state department is denying that and said it simply has to do with the law.
Still, India is so upset that its government has asked all U.S. diplomats serving in India to surrender their identity cards meaning they could be kicked out. They have also removed security barriers outside the U.S. embassy in New Delhi.
If convicted of falsifying immigration papers, Devyani could be sentenced up to 15 years behind bars.
