Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- Animal control officers are investigating a possible case of abuse.

A dog found dead, near Bishop Gorman High School, has neighbors wondering if the dog was struck by a bullet.

"It's wrong. Animals got nothing to do, you know. It's up to us to take care of them and when you see something like that it makes you ill," said Mike Martin who found the dog.

Martin, a construction worker, found the dog's lifeless body earlier this week. What he saw not only saddened him, but infuriated him.

"Somebody walked the dog out into the desert and shot him."

Animal control authorities confirmed officers are investigating the death, but won't say how he died or provide any further details.

They're not the only ones trying to figure out where the Pit Bull came from and what happened to him. Animal advocates have taken to social media, posting on Facebook and Craigslist to spread the word and find out whatever they can.

"I think it's important to see how the things that do happen in this city to animals because I do think people still turn a blind eye to it. This could have been someone's missing dog. It could have been a stolen dog," said Larue McCay with Las Vegas Animals in Need.

Possible animal abuse isn't the only concern. Animal advocate Gina Greisen believes the dog was killed at the spot, not just dumped, and is scared it happened just yards from a school.

"Because if someone is capable of taking a dog out here and shooting it in the head, right across the street from the school and right off of a construction site, what else are they capable of," Greisen expressed.

Action News decided not to show any photos of the dog, because they were graphic. The dog was a male Blue Nose Pit Bull found on Mesa Parkway.

If you know anything about this incident, call Clark County Animal Control.
