3rd person sentenced in Las Vegas-area hep C outbreak

CREATED Oct 31, 2013

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- A nurse anesthetist has been sentenced to 28 to 72 months in prison for his role in a 2007 Las Vegas-area hepatitis C outbreak.

Clark County District Court Judge Valerie Adair sentenced 77-year-old Keith Mathahs on Thursday.

He'd pleaded guilty in December to five criminal counts, including criminal neglect of patients resulting in death, insurance fraud and conspiracy to commit racketeering.

Mathahs is the third person to be sentenced this month in an outbreak traced to Dr. Dipak Desai's endoscopy clinics. It's been linked to two deaths.

Desai was ordered to life in prison with the possibility of parole, while nurse anesthetist Ronald Lakeman was ordered to eight to 21 years.

Prosecutors argued that Desai created a penny-pinching work environment that led to unsafe clinical practices and spread the virus.
