Community comes together for widow of Officer Vanbuskirk

CREATED Jul. 27, 2013

Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- The community continues to give to the widow of Las Vegas Police Officer David Vanbuskirk.

The 36-year-old search and rescue officer fell from a ledge in Mary Jane Falls on Mount Charleston, when his harness malfunctioned.

The hiker survived.

On Saturday, a fundraiser was held all-day for Vanbuskirk's widow at the Sam's Club at Serene and Eastern.

Colleagues, family and total strangers took time to donate what they could to help support the family of a fallen hero.

Businesses also pitched in with free food and shaved ice.

The Injured Police Officers Fund organized the donation drive.

Everyone who knew Vanbuskirk couldn't say enough about their former friend and colleague. For many, it's been hard to accept such a huge loss.

"I've had trouble sleeping since this happened. I keep thinking, did this really happen? Is Dave really gone?" said Officer Bob Lewis, Metro SWAT.

The fundraiser raised nearly $13,000 throughout the day.

If you'd still like to donate, head to any Wells Fargo bank and make donations to account: 6102.
