CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) -- The race for Nevada's 3rd Congressional District seat is officially under way.

Democratic committeewoman Erin Bilbray-Kohn announced her candidacy Monday to challenge two-term Republican Rep. Joe Heck for the southern Nevada seat in next year's election.

Bilbray-Kohn is the daughter of former Democratic Rep. James Bilbray and the founder of Emerge Nevada, a nonprofit organization that works to attract more women to run for elected office and participate in politics.

The 44-year-old mother of two says she's running to protect the middle class.

Nevada's 3rd Congressional District includes Henderson and a big chunk of unincorporated areas of Clark County.

Records show Democrats hold a 10,000 voter registration edge over Republicans, but there are more than 65,000 registered as non-partisan.

Heck was elected in 2010 and re-elected last November.
