North Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- The man that is believed to be responsible for the rape and murder of a child in Las Vegas in 1986 has finally been arrested.
61-year-old Jasper Everett Goddard was arrested after a routine traffic stop in Ozark, Missouri.
It was discovered that he was wanted for the rape and murder of 7-year-old April Marie Rhodes during the traffic stop.
Rhodes' body was discovered Nov. 24, 1986, in a storage locker not far from her home near East Lake Mead Boulevard and North Belmont Street in North Las Vegas.
She was last seen alive the day before.
DNA discovered during the original investigation was used to identify Goddard, who is a registered sex offender.
"In addition to technology advances in the law, the states are being much more consistent with the taking of DNA samples from sex offenders and other felons, that's where we get our matches from, and that's what happened in this case," said Sgt. Tim Bedwell with North Las Vegas Police.
Goddard was arrested on June 27. He is in Christian County jail awaiting extradition to Nevada.
