Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- A former resident of Las Vegas man has been arrested for the death of a young woman in 2006 that was originally believed to have been a suicide.
31-year-old Shaun Leflore has been arrested for the death of 21-year-old Chantell Hollowell.
On Dec. 12, 2006, police officers with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department responded to call about an apparent suicide on River Glen Drive, near West Flamingo Road and South Decatur Boulevard.
Leflore told officers that he witnessed his girlfriend kill herself. According to his statement to the police, he told them that he and Hollowell had been fighting prior to the incident.
He told police that he had learned that Hollowell was a prostitute and they had broken up before the night of the incident.
According to Leflore, the pair got into a fight the night of her death because of a text that she had received and he left the apartment while she was in the shower.
When he returned, he said that he found Hollowell naked. Leflore claimed that when Hollowell saw him, she shot herself in the head.
Investigators determined at that time that Hollowell took her own life.
Cold case detectives recently received new information that led them to look at the evidence again from the scene that day and interview several witnesses.
Las Vegas detectives conducted interviews with friends of Hollowell and Hollowell's mother. The interviews revealed a pattern of abuse and threats towards women when they would not do what they were told.
Detectives interviewed Leflore again in April while he was incarcerated in Mississippi for beating and attempting to kill a former girlfriend. He had been sentenced to 13 years for that crime.
During that interview, he gave statements that were inconsistent with what he had told police when Hollowell died.
As a result of multiple interviews with witnesses and Leflore and a re-examination of the physical evidence from Hollowell's death, a warrant was issued for Leflore's arrest.
Leflore has now been transported to Nevada and booked into the Clark County Detention Center.
Hollowell's death remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact LVMPD's homicide section at 7012-828-3521 or report it online at www.crimestoppersofnv.com.
