Man again sentenced to death in Las Vegas rape-killing

CREATED Jun 25, 2013

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- A Nevada death row inmate who won several appeals since he was convicted in 1986 of abducting, raping and killing a woman in Las Vegas has again been sentenced to death.

Richard Haberstroh was re-sentenced Monday by Clark County District Court Judge Elissa Cadish.

A jury spent more than two weeks hearing penalty phase evidence before deciding May 16 that Haberstroh should be executed.

Haberstroh is now 58. His sentence will be automatically appealed.

He twice represented himself at trial in the July 1986 kidnapping, rape and strangulation of Donna Kitowski.

The first jury deadlocked 11-1 and a judge declared a mistrial. The second jury convicted Haberstroh.

Prosecutors say Kitkowski was abducted from a grocery store parking lot and taken to the desert where she was sexually assaulted and strangled.
