Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- A man accused of robbing at least seven local banks is now behind bars and it was the quick thinking of a regular citizen that helped Las Vegas police catch him.
Herberto Porras is a man of many faces and police had been looking for him for a long time.
Porras is facing federal charges for robbing three banks in Las Vegas and detectives believe he is tied to at least three more.
Las Vegas police worked closely with the FBI to catch Porras.
They say that in each robbery, he would hand the bank teller a piece of paper that said he had a gun and that he wanted money.
According to Metro Sgt. Paul Gambini, he would wait patiently in line for his turn and would calmly present his note to the teller.
Surveillance cameras captured several clear photos of him and his getaway car described as a black H-3 Hummer.
Investigators say it is unusual that a suspect would strike so often without ever covering his face. He was caught after someone recognized him and called police.
According FBI Special Agent Henry Schlumpf, they were able to place Porras in custody within 20 hours of receiving the tip called into Crime Stoppers.
Porras was allegedly robbing banks to fuel a drug addiction.
Police say there is no proof that he ever actually had a weapon on him when he was committing the robberies.
They found a BB gun in his Hummer when they arrested him.
Overall, investigators say this case contributes to an alarming trend.
Last year at this time, there were 23 bank robberies in Las Vegas.
This year, there have already been 40 such robberies.
