Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- A police report sheds new light into the double murder and attempted suicide on Cotton Street over the weekend.
Detectives believe Manuel Mata III shot and killed his live-in girlfriend and her teen daughter and attempted to kill another child before turning the gun on himself.
The couple's relationship was described as "rocky" and Mata reportedly accused his girlfriend, Maria Flores, of cheating on him. Recently, she'd threatened to move out.
Tensions turned violent at the home on Saturday morning.
Mata's father called 911 when he discovered the shooting inside the home.
Arriving officers found Mata lying on top of Flores in the living room with a gun in his hand. Mata was alive, and an officer grabbed the gun from him. Flores did not survive.
Two children were found in a bedroom with gunshot wounds. Flores' 17-year-old daughter was found dead, and a 4-year-old girl was found barely alive.
Mata and the 4-year-old were taken to University Medical Center and are expected to survive.
Detectives interviewed Mata's teen daughter, who said she heard the gunshots and locked herself in her room. She called her grandfather, who reported the shooting to police.
Through talking to family and friends, detectives discovered Mata and Flores had been dating for about three years. During that time, Mata became jealous and angry towards Flores and would accuse her of cheating. About two weeks prior to the shooting, Flores threatened to move out, but Mata convinced her to stay.
Police said Mata also had financial problems and drank excessively. He was arrested for drunken driving and other traffic-related charges in the past.
Doctors confirmed to police that Mata shot himself in the head. He underwent surgery and now faces charges for murder with a deadly weapon, attempted murder with a deadly weapon and battery.
