Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- The holiday weekend took a tragic turn on Monday in a popular hiking destination just outside of Las Vegas.
Las Vegas Metro Police confirm a teen fell about 80 feet to his death just after noon in the Calico tanks region of the Red Rock National Conservation Area.
The teen was hiking with a group of high school friends when he strayed from the group to do his own exploring, authorities said.
A friend found the teen's body when he didn't come back to the group's meeting place.
Police say the terrain in the area is steep and rocky, but it's common for hikers to leave the marked trail. This time, it led to a deadly accident.
Crews were able to fly a helicopter and retrieve the teen's body. They took it back to a base camp set up by the park's entrance.
The Clark County Coroner's Office will release the teen's exact cause of death in the coming days.
