Foothill High School teacher arrested for alleged relationship with student

Henderson, NV (KTNV) -- A local teacher has been arrested for an alleged inappropriate relationship with a boy in one of her classes. Investigators say his parents noticed a red flag just in time.

According to Amanda Brennan's arrest report, the 24-year-old English teacher at Foothill High School admitted to falling in love with one of her 15-year-old students, even though she knows it's wrong.

The report says the boy's parents realized something was wrong when they found out through the security guard at their housing complex that Brennan had picked up their son to go to a movie one night, without their permission.

Students at Foothill High School are surprised.

"She was just my summer school teacher, so it kind of shocked me," says Zachary Wythe.

"That just sickens me," adds Jared Hammerli.

"I've known her since the beginning of my sophomore year," says Alexander Guel. "She started as a student teacher here. She was always a good teacher, never in any way made me uncomfortable. She would make jokes and stuff. But nothing inappropriate."

Parents, like Jacob Dicus, are outraged.

"It's not right," he says. "We put our trust in these teachers, that they're going to take good care of our children. Then we find out, there's bad stuff going on at school."

Clark County School District Police say cellphone records show about 1,000 text messages and calls were exchanged between the teacher and student over the course of eight days.

"Brennan willingly came forth to the school district police headquarters here, and cooperated with an interview," says Sgt. Mitch Maciszak.

Investigators don't believe Brennan's alleged relationship with the 15-year-old went any further than kissing and cuddling.

Even so, parents and students think this proves the need for more oversight.

"We need to make sure we're better screening teachers," Dicus says. "We need to make sure our schools are filled with people who have the best intentions for kids."

"Foothill is a good school," Guel adds. "We don't want it to be known for the teacher who had that kind of thing with a student. We just don't want that."

Brennan has been placed on paid administrative leave pending a full investigation and is not allowed near Foothill High School. She was arrested on two counts of luring a child. Those charges relate to the instances when she allegedly went out at night with the student.

She also faces once count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor for keeping the teenager out past curfew.
