May is a busy month for the Salvation Army of Southern Nevada. There are several special events planned to raise awareness and funds in the community.
Saturday, May 11, is the date for the 23rd Annual Letter Carriers Food Drive which benefits organizations across the country. The Salvation Army has been participating since its inception here in Las Vegas and receives all donations which come to the main Summerlin Post Office on Spring Gate and Town Center.
Monday, May 13 is the date for the annual Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary Luncheon, Nearly New Fashion Show and Sale. This year it will be held at The Orleans from 10:30 AM until about 2 PM with the Fashion Show following the Luncheon at about 1 PM. All of the clothing modeled is donated and available for sale in addition to the racks of fine donated clothing available for sale prior to the luncheon. This is a really fun event and tickets are only $40 per person.
On Thursday, May 16, we will have the First Annual Salvation Army Culinary Challenge, a "Chopped" style contest with 2 Le Cordon Bleu students and 2 of The Salvation Army's Culinary Vocational Program students competing. They will prepare an appetizer, entree' and dessert from surprise items in a basket and those items will be things we normally give away through our Food Pantry. That event will be held at Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts, 1451 Center Crossing Road, Las Vegas, 89144, 6 - 8 PM. Tickets are $25 and are available on our website, www.salvationarmysouthernnevada.org.
On Wednesday, May 22, The New York Staff Band, one of the finest brass bands in the country, will hold a benefit concert at Green Valley Methodist Church, 2200 Robindale in Henderson. The 7 PM concert is free though an offering will be taken to benefit The Salvation Army in Southern Nevada.
On Monday, May 27, from 6-10 PM, Poppy Den by Chef Angelo Sosa in Tivoli Village will be having a benefit evening. Twenty percent of all sales that night will go to The Salvation Army Family Services Food Pantry and other services.
