Shocking details in patient dumping investigation
Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- A newly-released report on patient dumping reveals how badly some sick and mentally ill patients were treated at the Rawson-Neal Psychiatric Hospital.
Hospital officials admit they've bused nearly 1,600 patients to other states.
A 49-page report released Wednesday by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid reveals that patient discharge procedures at Rawson-Neal were a mess.
Investigators found the facility failed to ensure a governing body was in charge; failed to ensure the medical staff answered to anyone; and failed to ensure there was a discharge plan that applied to all patients, not just the ones who were bused out of state.
Investigators also found potentially deadly patterns and violations of the hospital's own policies, including doctors prescribing supplements, but not detailing quantities, and prescribing medication to patients without their consent.
Investigators will make a surprise re-inspection.
Rawson-Neal could lose millions of dollars in federal funding if it doesn't follow the corrective measures detailed in the report.
