Woman dies from injuries following fire on Melody Rose

Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- Las Vegas Fire & Rescue was called to the scene of a fire Wenesday in the 6400 block of Melody Rose Avenue, near North Torrey Pines Drive and Smoke Ranch Road.

According to Las Vegas Fire & Rescue, a woman in her 60s was found unresponsive in a bedroom. She was transported to University Medical Center where she later died from her injuries. It appeared she suffered from smoke inhalation.

The woman's pet dog also died in the fire.

Firefighters said the cause appears to accidental and possibly because of careless smoking.

The woman's roommate said he left earlier in the morning to go shopping. He said on several occasions she smoked in bed; the place where fire investigators believe the fire started.

The American Red Cross is assisting the woman's roommate.

Damage was estimated at $60,000.

The fire started in the bedroom, which was gutted, and the rest of the unit sustained smoke damage.

Neighbors told the investigators the couple had lived there for more than 13 years and were well-known by most people in their community.
