Two mothers bonded together by tragic loss of daughter
Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- Nathan Benson is accused is fatally stabbing 44-year-old Shanna Ralston. Benson was critically injured by police during his arrest.
Officers said 27-year-old Benson was shot when he charged at them, holding two kitchen knives, but he survived.
Saturday night, family and friends gathered near Washington and Torrey Pines to remember his alleged victim with a vigil.
They remembered Shanna in prayer and through words spoken by the woman she considered to be her mom. "She used to say I have no family and then God gave me you and yours, and that's true," said Betty Pami, Shanna's adopted mother.
Then out of the darkness came the voice of a complete stranger; a stranger to everyone but Shanna.
"My name is Linda and I am her biological mother. And Betty, I know that Shanna loved you and your family so much," said Linda Hansell, Shanna's mother.
Shanna connected with her biological mother a few years back after a lengthy search.
Until now, Linda had never met Betty. On Saturday, the two women grieved the loss of a daughter, finding the greatest comfort in the arms of a stranger.
The women said this is the start of a new friendship, "I prayed and prayed that she would come here and I am so glad. God answered my prayers."
Those who went to the vigil, left with a purple flower, which was Shanna's favorite.
Benson was hospitalized after being shot by police, but he is facing murder charges as well as other charges stemming from that incident.
