(KTNV) -- The soft drink giant PepsiCo is facing backlash over a series of commercials that many people say goes too far.
Most of the controversy is swirling around the third commercial in the series for Mountain Dew which features a woman that is beaten and bandaged. She is shown at a police station trying to identify her attacker.
The commercial series was created by a rap artist called Tyler, The Creator and the men in the line-up are members of his hip-hop group Odd Future.
The series revolves around a goat that has become obsessed with Mountain Dew. The goat, voiced by Tyler, also appears in the line-up.
Some commenters are saying that the ad is actually more bizarre than racist. Others wonder why -- if it is so offensive toward African-Americans -- did a hip-hop group create it.
Profressor Boyce Watkins of Syracuse University has called it "the most racist commercial in history."
Either way, PepsiCo pulled the add and issued a statement saying:
"We have removed it from all Mountain Dew channels and Tyler, a member of the hip-hop group, is removing it from his channels as well."
Tyler issued a lengthy statement of his own on Tumblr in which he apologizes for the ad and claims that it was "never meant to be taken seriously."
Before the third video started making headlines on Wednesday, Rap Radar posted a video of the rapper talking about how much the executives at Pepsi loved the ad series when he pitched it.
Tyler is known for his absurdist style.
