Las Vegas police 8th most social friendly department in United States
Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department has been named the 8th most social friendly police department in the United States.
The list of the top 50 was released by MPHProgramsList.com.
According to their website, MPHProgramsList evaluated the social media presence of all police departments in the 100 largest cities in the United States by population.
There were 100 points possible: 30 for Facebook, 30 for Twitter, 20 for YouTube, and 20 for other.
Las Vegas ranked #42 for Facebook, #15 for Twitter, #4 for YouTube and #2 for other. Their overall score was 85.8.
The top 5 most social friendly police departments are:
1. Dallas Police Department -- 96.0
2. Boston Police Department -- 92.3
3. Portland Police Bureau -- 90.7
4. Kansas City Police Department -- 90.3
5. Jacksonville Sheriff's Office -- 89.0
Many police departments (and fire departments) now use their Twitter and Facebook accounts to update the public when there is an emergency situation in their areas. Police departments also use social media in an attempt to locate wanted suspects and learn new information about a crime.
In addition, social media is used to stay connected to the citizens in their communities, letting them know about outreach programs and open houses.
YouTube is often used by police departments to broadcast public service announcements or press conferences about high-profile crimes.
