Counterfeit toasters seized at seaport in California
Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- U.S. Customs and Border Patrol officers have seized thousands of toasters with with counterfeit safety markings.
Officials said that uncertified toasters could present risk of fire, shock and other injuries to consumers.
The toasters arrived from China in two shipments at the Los Angeles / Long Beach seaport in March.
After Underwriters Laboratories confirmed the appliances had counterfeit safety markings, officials seized about 15,000 toasters.
The value of the toasters was estimated at $72,597.
Officials say that in 2012, consumer electronics presenting potential safety or security risks represented 23 percent of all commodities seized by Customs and Border Control nationwide.
