Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- Several people from Southern Nevada ran the marathon and they told Action News they will never forget what they heard or saw.
Matt Paxton, who lives in the Las Vegas area, participated in the Boston Marathon. He had already finished the run when he heard about what had happened. He says he was in his hotel when he noticed everyone crowding the televisions at the hotel bar. That's when he found out the area he had just run through minutes earlier had been attacked.
His first thought was to find out if his friends, who were still at the marathon, were injured. It turns out they weren't. Paxton says it wasn't until later on in the day when the magnitude of the tragedy really struck him.
"When something like this hits, it just brings everything in perspective, it makes you think about what could have been if you had been at the wrong place at the wrong time," says Paxton. "It just puts everything in perspective of what's really important. Unfortunately, it's cast a huge shadow over what should have been an exciting eventful day for all the runners and participants."
But Paxton says he won't let whoever was behind this attack scare him off. He says he's more determined than ever to run the marathon again.
"As i thought about it on the flight back, it actually compels me to come back next year just because I don't want terrorists to to win or to make people afraid to show up and participate in things like that."
That's something Dr. Kyle Larson of Boulder City agrees with. He also participated in the Boston Marathon with his wife and was close by when the bombs went off. He told us he will return next year.
