Miss. cop, suspect shot, killed inside police HQ
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) -- Police in Jackson, Miss., are reeling from the killing of a decorated homicide detective inside the police department's headquarters as he was interviewing a suspect in a recent killing.
Authorities say Det. Eric Smith, who had been with the department since 1995, was gunned down inside an interview room late Thursday afternoon as he was questioning 23-year-old murder suspect Jeremy Powell about a killing days earlier. Police said Powell was in the process of being arrested at the time.
Officers heard several gunshots, and when they went to the room, found both Smith and Powell dead of multiple gunshot wounds.
Police did not release any details on the sequence of what happened, and said the case has been turned over to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation.
