(KTNV) -- Americans work longer hours, take fewer vacations and retire later in life than people in most countries.
A new study says that Americans are working themselves to death.
Researchers in Israel at Tel Aviv University say all the long hours and stress are doing a number on the human body.
They found that stressed out employees have a 79 percent greater chance of developing heart disease than non-stressed co-workers.
Stress could be worse for people than obesity and smoking. Add in that common stress relievers are overeating and smoking and doctors say that is a recipe for disaster.
The Mayo Clinic has some tips.
First, set realistic goals and don't try to do much. Second, prioritize your day and make the most of your time. Third, protect that time by setting clear boundaries between work and "me" time.
If it is a dire situation, looking for a different job can help. And stress reducers like exercise and sleep are recommended.
